Are the San Diego Chargers now poised for more offseason problems? Prized first round pick Ryan Matthews, who is poised to be a big part of the Chargers offense in 2010 seems to have changed his tune in the course of a month.

It is going to be very important for Matthews to get a deal done and in camp when the Chargers training camp opens on July 25th, especially with the situation surrounding WR Vincent Jackson and LT Marcus McNeill. Speaking to the media yesterday regarding him getting to camp on time, Matthews said, “It’s also a business. That’s what I have to realize…..I want to be on time. Hopefully that happens, if not, there’s nothing I can do”.

I’m almost certain what Matthews is referencing here is that his agent is waiting for the players above him to sign and get the best possible deal, and hopefully not a prolonged holdout from training camp based on unrealistic demands as his agent might be trying to gain increased leverage as Chargers head coach Norv Turner has already said he expects Matthews to get 300 touches in 2010.

The San Diego Chargers will just say no to the addition of out of work veteran WR Terrell Owens. San Diego would have seemed like a good fit for Owens as well as San Diego. The Chargers are facing their own crisis at the moment with disgruntled WR Vincent Jackson. Speaking to the San Diego media, Chargers GM A.J. Smith said, “We’re all set right now with our receivers. I don’t want to be involved. A lot of people have us targeted, but they know I wouldn’t do it”.

So far for Owens, Buffalo didn’t want him back, Cleveland wasn’t interested, New England wasn’t biting, Washington took a pass, and now San Diego. I think at this rate, the only way Owens finds work this season is if there is a key injury during preseason or early on in the regular season. Oh, if he only had 30 million reasons to play now.

Last month, Federal law enforcement agents searched the San Diego Chargers facility and at the time it was thought the warrants were related to the arrest of former DB Kevin Ellison. Federal investigators found that San Diego Chargers team doctor David Chao has written 108 prescriptions to himself sine June of 2008.

DEA officials declined details, stating they are conducting an ongoing investigation. And while Ellison’s agent said last month the DEA investigation had nothing to do with his client, a DEA spokesman said that it was Ellison’s arrest and the medication controversy surrounding the New Orleans Saints which led officials to conduct their investigations.

The San Diego Union Tribune states this is not the first time that Chao has had a run in with authorities. In 2002, Chao was fined by state authorities for failing to maintain proper records.

The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with LB Donald Butler. The 6’1″ 250 pound ‘backer out of Washington was the Chargers third round selection in this years draft. It is being reported that Butler will receive a 650,000 dollar signing bonus along with a base package worth nearly 2.6 million dollars.

Butler shined at the NFL Combine where he bench pressed 225 pounds 35 times.
